ROME, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks fell to the West Florida Argonauts, 1-0, in a defensive battle, Friday night.
The Argonauts took 20 shots for the game, but Shorter held them scoreless until the 88th minute.
"For us to hold them as long as we did was huge," head coach Ben Birdsong said.
Despite not taking any shots, SU's Hailey Johnston had a good run late in the second period, but the ball was stolen by a West Florida defender before she could get a shot off.
Birdsong credited the back line of Johnston and Chanel Mosley, as well as goal keeper Sydney Durham for helping the team to stay in the game. "They helped us stay in the game and have a chance to win it late," the fourth-year head coach stated.
The Argonauts scored the game winning goal in the 88th minute when Emily Vogler converted off a corner kick by Sara Helgadottir.
The 1-0 loss drops Shorter to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in Gulf South Conference play. West Florida improves to 8-3 and 6-0 in the GSC.
The Lady Hawks continue their homestand on Sunday when they welcome the Spring Hill College Badgers to Rome. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Ben Brady Field.
