ROME -- West Georgia used a second half surge to top the Hawks 44-0 Saturday afternoon.
Shorter stood firm through the first half, holding the Wolves to just one touchdown through the first thirty minutes. But, West Georgia came alive after the break, tacking on thirty-seven unanswered points for the 44-0 final score.
Just before halftime, Shorter looked to cut into the lead as
Brady Hammel attempted a 37-yard field goal - his second field goal attempt of the year - only to have the kick blocked by Jakyron Young to end the Hawks' threat.
The Hawks were held to 145 yards of offense in the game – 63 rushing and 82 receiving; while the Wolves tallied 391 yards on the afternoon.
Devante James made the start for Shorter (0-9, 0-6 GSC) at quarterback and was 8-16 on pass attempts with 71 yards.
Mason Long also made an appearance under center for the Hawks, completing one pass for 11 yards.
Alex McGhee led the rushing effort for the Hawks, rolling up 47 yards on 17 carries; while
Demerious Owensby added 18 yards on nine carries.
Carter Christian led on the receiving end, tallying three catches for 25 yards.
On defense,
Rodney Jackson recorded a team high 10 tackles – seven solo and three assisted.
Jevaris Jones just missed turning in a fifth game on the season with ten or more tackles, adding nine for the afternoon – seven solo and two assisted.
Justin Filmore added eight for the Hawks.
For West Georgia (6-3, 3-3 GSC), QB Willie Candler finished 9-13 on pass attempts for 164 yards. While, Lemarcus Franks tallied 100 yards rushing on 12 carries, and Brandon Walton posted 47 yards on two receptions. On defense, Ethan Hopla made eight tackles (three solo and five assisted).
Shorter will have one more chance to play in front of the home crowd as they host Mississippi College next Saturday, November 5, for a 1:30pm start.
