Pensacola, Fla. --Â For the second week in a row the Hawks were shut out on the road, this time as they fell to West Florida 36-0 in Pensacola.
The Hawks slip to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Argos - who are in their first year of football - improve to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
The Shorter defense held strong early, holding the home team scoreless through most of the the first half. But, West Florida finally broke through, with 5:06 to play in the second quarter, on a field goal, before adding to it moments later on a touchdown by Tate Lehtio to take a 10-0 lead into the break.Â
After halftime the Argos tacked on 26 additional points - 13 in both the third and fourth quarters - for the 36-0 final score.
All in all, the Hawks were held to just 98 yards of offense; while West Florida tacked on 470 yards of their own.Â
Shorter used all three quarterbacks in the game as starter Tyler Pullum went out on the opening drive due to an injury. Matt Williams went 7-13 on pass attempts for 54 yards; while Devante James added 8-17 passing with 38 yards.
Alex McGhee and Dante Borders where the lone Hawks to rush for positive yards on the afternoon; tallying 46 on 12 carries and nine on seven carries, respectively.
On the receiving end, it was Elijah Gilbert who led the effort, pulling in three catches for 34 yards. Joseph Ross also added three catches for 16 yards on the day.
On defense, Jevaris Jones was back for the Hawks after missing last week's game with a concussion, and picked up just where he left off; aiding in 13 tackles for the afternoon - nine solo and four assisted. While, John Jarrard added nine for Shorter - five solo and four assisted.
Argos' quarterback, Kaleb Nobles posted 324 yards on the afternoon; going 29-49 on pass attempts. He also added 19 yards rushing on six carries. While, Daviante Sayles added 44 yards on 14 carries and Caleb Robinson tallied 76 yards on six catches with a touchdown.
The Hawks will be back in action next Saturday, October 29, when they return home to host West Georgia for Homecoming. Game time is set for 1:30 PM EST.
