ROME, Ga. – After 98 minutes of play, the Lady Hawks found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, as they fell to the Delta State Lady Statesmen, 2-1.
Delta State scored just seven minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead, and it looked as if it might stay that way until the end, but
Corrie Thomas had other ideas.
In the 59th minute, the ball deflected off several players near the goal, and Thomas ended up with a touch. The junior forward made the most of her chance, putting the ball past the keeper for the equalizer.
With the score tied at one, Shorter had three chances to score late in the second.
Ashley Keller,
Alexa Moore, and
Julia Raymond all took shots but came up empty and the game headed to extra time.
In overtime, Thomas looked for her second goal of the game, but her attempt was wide of the net in the 92nd minute. Just five minutes later, Delta State scored the game-winning goal, leaving Ben Brady Field with a 2-1 victory.
For the game, Delta State took 18 shots, and Shorter's
Alden Powell saved nine. The Lady Hawks managed only seven attempts, with DSU's Emily Oldacre saving one.
The loss drops Shorter to 1-12-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Statesmen improve to 5-9 on the year, with a 1-8 mark in conference play.
The Lady Hawks return to action Sunday against Mississippi College. At halftime, the team will honor its seniors for their contributions to the program. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Ben Brady Field.
