Volleyball drops both on Day 1 of Crossover

ORLANDO -- The Lady Hawks opened play at the GSC/SSC Crossover Tournament with 3-0 losses to No. 21 Tampa and No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic.

Shorter drops to 14-4 on the season; while the Spartans improve to 12-4 and the Sailfish move to 14-3.

Against Tampa, the Lady Hawks struggled to get anything going, hitting .071 for the match; while the Spartans tallied a .290 average on attempts. Set scores for the game were 25-19, 25-15, and 25-15, respectively.

Elizabeth Dowd led the team with seven kills, but it was Kelsi Jones who made the most of her attempts; hitting .429 on the afternoon with six kills on 14 attempts. Alli Bell led in assists with 14, and Cheyenne McLemore added two service aces.

On the receiving end, Dowd posted 12 digs; while McLemore added 10. At the net, Jones and Morgan Cleveland each assisted on two blocks.

Despite the 3-0 loss to PBA, the Lady Hawks matched the 14th-ranked team blow for blow; leading for much of the match. Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, and 25-18, respectively.

Dowd once again led the attack with 10 kills for the match. While Cleveland added six; Hannah Flack and Tiffani Estep each finished with five. Cheyenne Frady turned in 19 assists for the evening, and Bell dished out 11. At the service line, Frady and Cleveland each finished with two aces.

McLemore paced the defense with 19 digs. Cleveland also finished with double-figures in digs with 11. And, of the nine blocks on the night, Estep had a hand in five and Dowd added four; while Jones assisted on three.

The team will look to rebound Saturday afternoon as they take on No. 22 Florida Southern to close out the tournament.
