ROME -- The Lady Hawks got back in the win column after last week's setback with a 3-1 win over Christian Brothers to begin the second swing through the conference for the year.
Shorter improves to 14-2 on the season and 9-2 in the GSC; while the Lady Bucs move to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
The Lady Hawks got off to a quick start, winning the first two sets by 25-18 and 25-17 scores, respectively. Before CBU bounced back in the third set with a 25-22 win, and Shorter closed out the victory with a 25-15 win in the final frame.
In each of the first two sets, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a big lead early; commanding play in each. But, the Lady Bucs wouldn't go down without a fight and after swapping points for most of the third set, the visitors were able to put together a three point run to pull away. Shorter opened the final set with a 5-0 run to take the lead, before adding another four point run later in the frame to keep the momentum and closed out the win by scoring the matches final five points on the serve of
Elizabeth Dowd
Dowd made the most of her service opportunities for the night by tallying four aces and posting a .938 serve percentage on 32 total attempts – nearly twice as many as anyone else in the match.
Madeline Munroe led the attack for Shorter with 13 kills on the night; while Dowd chipped in with nine and
Tiffani Estep added eight. In addition to Dowd's four aces,
Cheyenne Frady added two to her league leading total, and
Hannah Flack delivered one.
Frady posted 18 assists for the match to the lead the Lady Hawks; while
Alli Bell added 15 in the win.
Dowd led on the receiving end, too, with 16 digs in the match.
Cheyenne McLemore added 12 and
Morgan Cleveland finished with 11. While, at the net, Estep had a hand in eight of the Lady Hawks 11 blocks on the night. Cleveland and Flack each assisted on four.
Shorter will look to keep the strong play going this weekend with a series of tough in-region matches at the annual Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover when they take on the No. 21 Tampa, No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic, and No. 22 Florida Southern in Orlando, Fla.
