The Lady Hawks earned the season split with West Florida Saturday afternoon; topping the Argos 68-59 in Pensacola.
The win keeps Shorter tied with UWF for fourth place in the league standings as both teams move to 10-5 in Gulf South Conference play.
West Florida (12-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, but the Lady Hawks (13-6) answered with back-to-back baskets from
Taylor Adams and
Jackie Hudson to tie things up with 7:25 to play in the first quarter. The Argos regained the lead on their next possession with a layup from Kelly Preston. But, a free throw from Adams and a layup from
Shakierya McClendon sparked a 7-2 run to give Shorter an 11-8 advantage entering the first media timeout.
In the final minutes of the quarter the Lady Hawks added to their lead, and went into the second quarter up, 21-15. From there, Shorter never trailed, despite West Florida using an 8-2 run to close out the second quarter – and begin the third – to cut the lead to one (32-33) on a free throw from Courtney Meyer with 8:48 to go in the third.
In the third period Shorter outscored the Argos 19-16 to maintain the advantage. And, in the final ten minutes the Argos cut the lead to as little as two, on a layup from Preston, but that was as close as they'd get as the Lady Hawks turned in a 13-5 run to keep the advantage and earn the win. In the final period Shorter converted 7 of 10 free throws.
Madison Rice and
Shaundricka Mann each posted 12 points in the game; while Adams and McClendon added 11. West Florida was led by Meyer's double-double of 15 points, 18 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Thursday evening when North Alabama visits the Winthrop-King Centre for a 6:00pm start.
