Lady Hawks split final day at Bobcat Classic

Milledgeville, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks split the final day of the Bobcat Classic; falling to No. 15 Wingate, 3-1, before topping Charleston, 3-0, to close out the tournament.

Against Wingate, Shorter fought back from a 2-0 deficit to cut the lead in half by winning the third set 25-23 and just missed forcing a fifth, dropping the final set 26-24. In the last set, the Lady Hawks pulled away late on four consecutive points, and after trading points back-and-forth, the Bulldogs put together a run of their own – rallying to tie the game at 23. Shorter answered with set point, but couldn't convert the winner as Wingate tallied scored three times to earn the win.

Elizabeth Dowd led the Lady Hawks with 13 kills in the match; while Tiffani Estep, Danielle Melton, and Alicia McClellan each tallied 7. Cheyenne Frady recorded 23 assists against Wingate and Dena Pierce chipped in the 18.

Defensively, Cheyenne McLemore led the way with 19 digs, Dowd added 15, and Pierce finished with 13. McClellan posted three blocks in the match – two solo, one assisted – while Estep assisted on two.

After the setback against Wingate, the Lady Hawks bounced back to top Charleston in three sets. Sets scores were 25-17, 25-15, and 25-20, respectively.

Dowd, once again, led the attack; posting a team high 14 kills; while Estep just missed double figures with 9. Madeline Munroe, and Pierce each recorded three service aces in the match, and Pierce also led the team in assists with 25. Frady added 16 assists for Shorter.

McLemore posted 17 digs for the Lady Hawks, Pierce added 10, and Dowd chipped in with 7. Estep made the most of her time on the front row, turning in four blocks – one solo, three assisted – while Munroe assisted on two.

Dowd was named Shorter's honoree for the the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Hawks will have a bit of break, as they won't be back in action until September 15, when they open Gulf South Conference play at home against Christian Brothers. Game time is set for 7:00pm. Fans unable to attend the match can follow all the action live at www.goshorterhawks.com.
