ROME -- The Lady Hawks opened Gulf South Conference play Tuesday evening with a 3-1 win over Christian Brothers to improve to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in the GSC. The Lady Bucs move to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Shorter opened the match with a 25-20 win in set one, before Christian Brothers rallied to tie things up with a 25-21 victory in set two. The Lady Hawks took the final two sets 25-21 to secure the win.
Offensively,
Elizabeth Dowd led the attack with 11 kills on the night; while
BreAnna Thompson Alicia McClellan each chipped in with 7. In the match, Shorter tallied 12 service aces;
Kelsi Jones recording 5 and
Cheyenne McLemore adding 3.
Cheyenne Frady dished out 23 assists for the match to lead the Lady Hawks, and
Dena Pierce posted 19.
Defensively, McLemore led in receptions, turning in 15 digs; while Dowd added 12 and Pierce chipped in with 8. Shorter also finished the night with 9 blocks with McClellan posting 4 (3 solo, 1 assisted), and both
Tiffani Estep and Thompson finishing with 3.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Friday, September 18, as they begin a three game, Gulf South Conference, road trip at North Alabama. Game time is set for 8:00pm eastern. The trip will continue Saturday at Alabama Huntsville, before concluding Tuesday at Union. Shorter will return home Friday, September 25, to take on Valdosta State at 7:00pm eastern.
