ROME -- They needed extra time, but in the end the Lady Hawks came out on top; defeating Mars Hill 3-2 on an overtime goal Saturday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
Newcomer
Amber Miller put Shorter on the board early, converting a penalty kick in the 2nd minute, for her first goal as a Lady Hawk. Breona Tate tied things up ten minutes later with a shot from the left side; which she placed just out of reach of Shorter goalkeeper,
Alden Powell. Coming in the game in relief,
Corrie Thomas didn't waste any time putting the Lady Hawks back on top, netting a goal in the 41st minute to provide the 2-1 halftime advantage.
Leading at the break, Shorter looked to keep things going, but Mars Hill's Hannah Russell had other plans, finding the back of the net on a pass from Kanani Thomas in the 62nd minute to once again tie the game. Through the remaining minutes of regulation, both teams fought to regain the advantage, but neither could net the go ahead; forcing the extra time.
In the opening seconds of overtime, Miller quickly found open space only to see her shot go wide. Minutes later, however,
Tabea Kirchner was able to provide the heroics, netting her first goal of the year on a breakaway attempt to the left side, crossing the ball just past the goalkeeper.
In total, the Lady Hawks outshot the Lions 19-7, placing 10 on goal.
Powell played the complete game in goal for Shorter, making four saves through 94 minutes.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Tuesday, September 8, when they travel to Emmanuel College for a 6:00pm start.Â
