ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to No. 20 West Florida 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
Shorter moves to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play; while the Argos improve to 10-2 on the year and 4-0 in the GSC.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the set one, leading by as many as seven late in the match only to have West Florida come back and tied the set at 20-all. After that the teams traded points, with both having set point multiples time before the Argos tallied the win 28-26 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. West Florida followed with a 25-20 win in set two to extend thier lead, but the Lady Hawks answered in set three to cut the advantage in half. In the third frame Shorter pulled away early, scoring five straight points to start the match, and building on that lead, put the Argos away 25-13. West Florida closed out the win in the fourth set with a 25-15 victory to take the match 3-1.
Elizabeth Dowd led the attack for Shorter, tallying 13 kills on the day.
Tiffani Estep followed close behind with 12 kills, and
Kelsi Jones added 7 for the match.
Dena Pierce posted a team high 24 assists and
Cheyenne Frady added 12.
Morgan Cleveland led the Lady Hawks with 3 service aces on the day.
On the receiving end, Shorter finished with five players in double figures in digs.
Cheyenne McLemore led with 23, followed by Dowd with 20, and Frady with 12. Pierce and Cleveland each added 10 in the match.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Wednesday, September 30, when they travel to Livingston, Ala. to take on West Alabama. Game time is set for 7:00pm eastern.
