Jackson, Tenn. -- After falling behind Union 2-1, the Lady Hawks rallied to win the final two sets and took the match 3-2 Tuesday evening on the road.
The win improves Shorter to 5-2 on the year and 3-1 in conference play; while the Bulldogs move to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Lady Hawks took the first set, 25-22, before falling in the next two sets 25-16 and 25-15, respectively. But Shorter bounced back, winning the fourth set 25-22, to tie things up and force the tiebreak; which they won 15-8 to earn the win.
Both
Elizabeth Dowd and
BreAnna Thompson turned in 10 kills each, while
Danielle Melton added a career and season high nine on the night.
Dena Pierce led with 19 assists for Shorter, and
Cheyenne Frady added 17. Dowd, Pierce, Frady, and
Cheyenne McLemore each posted two service aces, as well.
Defensively, McLemore led the Lady Hawks with 21 digs on the evening, while Dowd added 16 and Frady chipped in with eight.
Alicia McClellan turned in seven blocks on the night – five solo and two assisted to lead Shorter's front row.
The Lady Hawks will return to the Winthrop-King Centre Friday and Saturday as they host Valdosta State and No. 20 West Florida in Gulf South Conference play.
