Florence, Ala. --Â The Hawks earned the win 3-1 in game one of the three game series with North Alabama Saturday evening.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when Shorter broke through with a run to take the lead 1-0 on an RBI single from
Jake Harrelson to bring in
Dustin Lawson. The Hawks then added to it in the eighth as
George Ragsdale scored on an error by the shortstop. The Lions pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from Dylan Calhoun to cut the lead to one, but Shorter answered to maintain the two run lead with a final run in the ninth on a double from Ragsdale.
Travis McPherson earned the win for the Hawks; pitching 7.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
Christian Champion recorded his first save of the year, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Ragsdale went 3-5 at the plate in the game with one RBI, while Lawson added two hits in four at bats with a run scored.
Shorter will look to keep things going tomorrow in the final regular season doubleheader of the year. Games are set to begin at 2:00pm eastern.
