No. 6 UAH sweeps Hawks

Huntsville, Ala. -- Alabama Huntsville completed the three game sweep of the Hawks Sunday afternoon, taking both games of the doubleheader. Game scores were 12-10 and 2-0, respectively.

Shorter (7-7, 5-4 GSC) used an eight run fourth inning to take the lead 9-4 in game one, only to see the 6th ranked Chargers mount a late comeback to earn the win.

The Hawks scored first, tallying a run in the first inning on an error by the catcher. Alabama Huntsville (12-1-1, 8-1-1 GSC), however, answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and added to their lead with three in the second.

In the fourth, Tyler Trenary got things going for Shorter with a 2-run homer to left field. Dylan Riner then singled to plate Dustin Lawson, and then came in to score on a 3 RBI double from Zach Santos to make it a 7-4 game. A 2 RBI single from Trenary later in the inning brought the Hawks advantage to 9-4.

In the fifth, Shorter added a run to make it a 10-4 game as Brian Cabrera scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning, UAH cut the lead to one with five runs. And then took the lead 11-10 with two in the seventh, before closing out the win 12-10 with a run in the eighth.

Brandon Reynolds recorded the loss for the Hawks after pitching 3.1 innings in relief; allowing 3 runs – 1 earned – on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

In game two the Chargers took the lead in the fourth on a single from Zach Dugas and the run proved to be enough as they held Shorter scoreless. In the sixth UAH added a run on an error for the 2-0 final score.

Blake Weir recorded the loss for the Hawks; allowing one run on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts.

Ian Redetzky led Shorter at the plate with 5 hits on the day, George Ragsdale chipped in with four hits; while, both Riner and Santos recorded three each.

The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday, March 10, as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on Stillman College for a 2:00pm eastern start before returning home for a weekend GSC series with West Georgia Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15.
