ROME -- The Hawks earned their first win at home this season with an 8-5 victory over Rhodes College Saturday afternoon.
Shorter improves to 4-7 on the year, while the Lynx fall to 7-5 overall.
Rhodes jumped out to the lead early in the first period, netting the first goal of the day at the 12:33 mark; only to have the Hawks tie things up four minutes later as
Jack Currier found the back of the net. The Lynx regained the lead thirty second later, but again Shorter was there to tie the game; this time on a goal from
Jordan Getz. Rhodes, added a final goal with 2:41 to go to take a 3-2 lead into the second period.
The lone goal of the second frame came at 13:27 as
Travis Getz netted a pass from brother, Jordan, to tie the game.
The Hawks took the lead in the third period for good, tallying four consecutive goals.
Tyler Kristiansen got things going with 13:21 to play, and was followed two minutes later by
Michael Williams.
Alex Malinowski made it a 6-3 game as he found the back of the net with 8:09 remaining, and Kristiansen capped off the third period scoring with his second goal of the game with 7:04 to play. Ryan Fennelly scored for Rhodes with forty-five seconds remaining in the quarter to cut Shorter's lead to 7-4 going into the final fifteen minutes.
Fennelly scored for a second time for the Lynx to open the fourth period and cut into the Hawks' lead, but Shorter held on to earn the win, adding a final goal with 1:29 to play as T. Getz scored on another assist from J. Getz.
JR Willers played the complete game in goal for the Hawks; making 10 saves on 15 shots faced.
In total, Shorter outshot the Lynx 30-27 and held the advantage in shots on goal, 21-15. While also scooping up 27 ground balls and winning 10 faceoffs.
The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday, March 31, as Emmanuel College visits Ben Brady Field for a 7:00pm start.
