Hawks top Emmanuel, 11-5

ROME -- The Hawks moved to 5-7 on the year with an 11-5 win over Emmanuel at home Wednesday afternoon.

Shorter took the lead early and never looked back; opening the first quarter with back to back goals from Travis Getz and Jordan Getz. The Lions answered with 13:54 to play in the second frame, cutting the lead in half, but that's as close as they've get the remainder of the game. T. Getz added two goals in the second period to extend the Hawks lead to 4-1, the first assisted by Zachery Dirkse and the second by J. Getz

Joshua Skinner, who went 9-12 in faceoffs for the game, tallied the first goal of the second half as he scored within the first fifteen seconds of the period. Emmanuel made it a 5-3 game with back to back goals, only to have Shorter answer with back to back goals of their own from Tyler Schott and Josh Hayes. Austin Brundage closed out the scoring for the frame with a score at the 2:19 mark for the Lions.

The Hawks added to the lead in the final period with four goals while holding Emmanuel to one. T. Getz and Tyler Kristiansen each scored twice, while Dirkse and Alex Malinowski added assists for the 11-5 final score.

In total, Shorter outshot the Lions 44-33 and held a 29-15 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks also won 13 of the 19 faceoffs and added 33 ground balls – Skinner scooped up a team high 6, while Scott Dangel added 5.

JR Willers played the complete game in goal for Shorter; making 10 saves through 60 minutes to earn the win.

Shorter will return to action Saturday, April 4, as they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on Lees-McRae College.
