ROME --Â The Hawks fell to Wingate, 18-10, Saturday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter falls to 2-6 on the season; while the Bulldogs improve to 5-4 overall.
Tyler Schott got things going for the Hawks in the first period; scoring the first goal of the game with 4:49 to play. Wingate answered a minute later to tie the game as Tanner Kotch netted his first of six goals in the game. Shorter took the lead back with twenty-eight seconds remaining in the period on a goal from
Travis Getz on a pass from
Alex Malinowski to take a 2-1 lead into the second frame.
The Bulldogs tied the game back up with 12:54 on the clock on a goal from Cory Shumacher, only to see
Ben Janes give the lead back to the Hawks two minutes later. Wingate then netted three consecutive goals to take a 5-3 lead. Getz and Malinowski teamed up again with 3:57 to play in the period to cut the Bulldogs lead to one. Wingate added a goal at the 2:19 mark to take a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
Robert Benjamin sparked a 5-0 run from the Bulldogs to extend their lead to 11-4 with 6:25 to play in the third period. Shorter got on the board in the frame at the 3:41 mark, as Getz netted his third goal from Malinowski. Malinowski then netted one of his own with 2:32 to play, and Schott found the back of the net for the second time in the game with 1:32 on the clock. Wingate added a final goal with six seconds on the clock to go into the final fifteen minutes with the lead, 12-7.
In the final period, the Bulldogs opened the scoring with a goal from Ryan Vogrig with 12:39 to play. But, the Hawks answered, cutting the lead to three, 13-10, with consecutive goals from Getz, Janes, and
Zachery Dirkse. Only to have Wingate close out the game with five unanswered goals to earn the win 18-10.
JR Willers played the complete game in goal for Shorter; making 9 saves through sixty minutes.
In total, the Bulldogs outshot the Hawks 34-21, and held the advantage 27-14 in shots on goal. Wingate also won 23 of the 30 faceoffs in the game, and led in ground balls 41-17.
Shorter was 3-6 in extra man opportunities, while Wingate converted 2-6.
The Hawks will be back in action Saturday, March 21, as they travel to Kennesaw State University for a 6:00pm start.Â
