Hawks top Kennesaw State, 17-7

Kennesaw, Ga. -- The Hawks topped Kennesaw State Saturday evening 17-7 on the road.

Shorter moves to 3-6 on the year with the win; the Owls suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 9-1 overall.

Travis Getz got things going for the Hawks in the opening frame as he scored in the opening seconds on a pass from Alex Malinowski, only to have Kennesaw State tie things up four minutes later on the first of five goals from Edward Thorne. Getz added his second goal of the night at the 6:30 mark to put Shorter back up 2-1; Andrew King tallied his first goal of the game with 2:51 to play in the period to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead after the first fifteen minutes.

Jordan Getz and Malinowski went back-to-back to open the second quarter and extend Shorter's lead. With 3:50 to play Cody Clark found the back of the net for the Owls to make it a 5-2 game, but the Hawks answered moments later as Tyler Kristiansen scored to maintain the advantage. Thorne scored with 2:00 minutes to go to cut Shorter's lead to 6-3 heading into halftime.

The teams traded goals in the third period, with each scoring three time to make it a 9-6 game. J. Getz, King, and Malinowski each tallied goals for the Hawks.

Shorter put the game away in the fourth period as they opened the frame with seven unanswered goals to extend their lead to 16-6. J. Getz tallied three goals during the span, while Tyler Schott netted two and both, Jack Currier and Ben Janes, added one. Thorne broke the scoreless streak for the Owls with Kennesaw's final goal of the game with 1:08 to play, before Malinowski recorded the final score for the Hawks with fifty-nine seconds remaining.

As a team, Shorter outshot the Owls 37-28 and held a 30-16 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks won 21 of the 27 face-offs and tallied 39 ground balls to Kennesaw's 22; while also going a 14-14 in clear attempts.

JR Willers and Tanner Short split time in goal for the Hawks. Willers tallied four saves through thirty minutes, while Short made five.

J. Getz led the attack for Shorter; tallying five goals in the game. Malinowski added 3 goals on the night to go along with 3 assists.

The Hawks will return to action Wednesday, March 25, as Colorado Mesa University visits Ben Brady Field for a 5:00pm start.
