Young Harris, Ga. --Â The Hawks opened the 2015 season with a doubleheader at Young Harris Saturday afternoon, dropping both games. Scores were 11-7 and 6-5, respectively.
In game one,
Zach Santos got things going for Shorter with a solo homerun in the second to put the hawks up 1-0, and followed it up with a three-run shot in the third to bring the advantage to 4-0.
Young Harris answered in the bottom of the third with five runs of their own to take the lead, 5-4, and added to the lead with one run in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it an 11-4 game. The Hawks battled back in the ninth, scoring three times. The first run came on a double from
George Ragsdale to plate
Dylan Riner. Ragsdale then scored on a double from Santos, and Santos came in on a single from
Bryan Mathews to round out Shorter's scoring for the game.
Colton Cross recorded the loss for the Hawks in the game one; pitching three innings, while allowing five runs on three hits with six walks and three strikeouts.
The Mountain Lions scored first in game two; taking the lead in the third inning on a single from Brett Westmoreland. Shorter then tied the game in the fourth as Riner doubled to plate
Brian Cabrera and
Ian Redetzky. Young Harris' Zach Odom homered in the fifth to put the Mountain Lions up 4-2, but the Hawks once again answered to tie things up in the sixth on a 2 RBI double from
Dustin Lawson. In the bottom of the inning Jimmy Pinakidis notched a two-run triple to swing the advantage back in Young Harris' favor, 6-4. Shorter mounted a comeback in the eighth, adding one run on a sacrifice fly from Riner for the 6-5 final score.
Russell Crosby suffered the loss for Shorter in the game; allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts through 5.2 innings of work.
On the day the Hawks were led by Santos' three hits, five RBI, and three runs scored. While, Riner posted 2 hits, three RBI, and one run scored, and Ragsdale added four hits, one RBI, and two runs scored.
