Young Harris, Ga. --Â The Hawks earned their first win of the season Sunday afternoon, topping Young Harris 19-8 on the road.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, Shorter's bats came alive and the Hawks went on to pound out 27 hits on the day.
In the second inning Shorter cut the lead to one as
Patrick Sanderson recorded his first homerun as a Hawk to plate
Blaze Vazquez and
Bryan Mathews to make it a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Mountain Lions answered to extend their lead to three scoring twice.
Shorter took the lead 9-6 by adding two runs in each the third, fourth, and fifth innings as Vazquez,
Ian Redetzky,
Brian Cabrera,
Zach Santos, and
George Ragsdale delivered RBI hits.
In the sixth the Hawks scored five runs on four hits to put the game out of reach. And added to it with a run in the seventh and four in the ninth for the 19-8 final score.
Every player in the lineup recorded at least one hit in the game, with both
Dylan Riner and Cabrera recording five each. Cabrera also finished with 4 RBI on the day; while Santos went 4-7 with 5 RBI and his third homer of the season.
The Hawks used six pitchers on the day with
Blake Weir earning the win with a 4.1 inning, one run, three hit, five strikeout performance.
Shorter will look to keep the momentum going Wednesday, February 11, as they travel to Americus, Ga. to take on Georgia Southwestern; game time is set for 5:00pm.
