ROME -- For the second straight day the Hawks walked off with the win to top Valdosta State. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eleventh Sunday afternoon, Saturday's hero,
Tyler Trenary, was given the chance once again and he didn't disappoint as he drew a walk to bring in
Blaze Vazquez for the win, 7-6.
The Blazers got things going early in the game as Bryant Haymon and Kevin Cruz delivered solo homeruns. But, Shorter (4-3, 2-1 GSC) answered to take the lead 3-2 in the second as Vazquez was hit by a pitch with the bases load to plate
Zach Santos,
Patrick Sanderson provided a sacrifice fly, and
Dylan Riner brought in
Ian Redetzky on a fielder's choice.
Valdosta State (6-2, 1-2 GSC) tied the game in the third on a double from Hayden Jones, only to see the Hawks regain the lead in the fourth. Vazquez opened the inning with a homer to left field, and Riner plated Sanderson on a ground out to make it a 5-3 game. The Blazers cut the lead to one the next inning, but the Hawks bounced back to add a run in the sixth to maintain the advantage.
The Blazers scored twice in the eighth to tie the score, 6-6, and send the game to extra innings, setting up the eleventh inning comeback for the Hawks. Vazquez doubled to lead off the inning,
Jake Harrelson walked, and Riner was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Trenary.
Christian Champion earned the win for Shorter; pitching two innings in relief, allowing one hit and a walk, with two strikeouts.
Travis McPherson started the game for the Hawks; pitching five innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
