ROME -- Despite making a late comeback the Hawks couldn't push ahead, falling to Carson-Newman in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon, 6-5.
With the loss, Shorter moves to 4-4 on the season; while the Eagles improve to 6-3.
Carson-Newman jumped out to an early lead; scoring twice in the second inning and adding to with one in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. The Hawks begin chipping away in the sixth as two runs score. The first as
Zach Santos came in on a failed pickoff attempt, and then as
Bryan Mathews crossed the plate on
Ian Redetzky's first RBI single of the game.
Patrick Sanderson scored on an error in the seventh to make it a 6-3 game, and in the eighth the Hawks cut the lead to one as Redetzky plated Santos on a single through the left side and then score on a double from
Blaze Vazquez.
Redetzky finished the day 2-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Santos chipped in with a hit and scored two runs.
Justin Machado recorded the loss for Shorter; pitching five innings, while allowing six runs – four earned – on six hits with two strikeouts and five walks.
The Hawks will look to get back into the win column Saturday as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to take on Christian Brothers in a three game Gulf South Conference series.
