LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Shorter Lady Hawks used a 15-1 run to close out the first half, take command of the game and go on to record a 65-52 Gulf South Conference win over host West Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
The victory, one which keeps the Lady Hawks in position to clinch a berth for the GSC tournament, improves Shorter to 11-14 overall and 7-12 in the conference heading into their final two home games of the regular season next week against Delta State on Feb. 19 and Mississippi College on Feb. 21.
Against West Alabama (10-13, 7-12), Shorter out itself in a 19-19 deadlock with less than 10 minutes left in the opening half, then went on the run to eventually grab a 34-20 lead at halftime.
The Lady Hawks opened the second half remaining in control and took their biggest lead of the game, 55-28, when
Ieshia Alexander scored inside.
Alexander, who poured in 14 points in the second half, led the Lady Hawks with a game-high 19 points and dished out four assists.
Three of her teammates also finished in double figures as
Madison Rice added 11 points;
Shaundricka Mann had 10 points – all in the first half – and had six rebounds; and
Grace Rogers finished with 10.
Shorter also had one of its best shooting gams of the season, connecting on 51.1 percent of its shots from the floor.
Britney McCloud led UWA with 15 points.
After the Lady Hawks play their final home stand of the season next week, they close out the regular season on Feb. 28 visiting Lee.
