Hawks earn first win of the season at North Greenville

Tigerville, S.C. -- The Hawks posted their first win of the season Saturday afternoon, topping North Greenville on the road in Tigerville, S.C.

Shorter moves to 2-1 overall; while the Crusaders fall to 0-1.

North Greenville got things going in the first quarter as Drew Warren tallied the Crusaders first goal of the year. But it was all Shorter after that as Ben Janes netted his first two goals of the game in the opening fifteen minutes. Colin Doyle and Jordan Getz each added scores for the Hawks in the first frame to give Shorter the lead 4-1.

The Hawks added three goals in the second period, two in man up situations – the first from Zachery Dirkse with 11:57 on the clock and the second the third of the game from Janes with 8:28 to go. Logan Wilkerson also chipped in with a goal during the period – his first of the season.

Shorter extended its lead to 12-4 in the third quarter with five goals. Getz opened the frame with his second goal of the contest before thirty seconds had ticked off the clock. Dirkse got in on the action once again at the 10:13 mark in the period, and Michael Santry and Alex Malinowski (2) tallied three consecutive goals over a one minute span late in the period. The Crusaders netted three goals in the quarter with two coming from Dieter Treusdell.

The Hawks closed out the win 18-8 in the final quarter with six goals; while holding North Greenville to four. Janes scored twice in the period to finish the day with a team high, 5 goals. Dirkse, Scott Dangel, Jordan Butz, and Travis Getz each chipped in with one goal during the final fifteen minutes.

JR Willers recorded the win for the Hawks; making four saves on 12 shots on goal.

In total Shorter outshot the Crusaders 46-21, and 33-12 in shots on goal. The Hawks went 15-29 in face-off wins and both teams finished 29-32 in clear attempts. North Greenville held the advantage, 47-38, in groundballs.

Shorter will be back in action next Saturday, February 21, as Lindenwood University visits Ben Brady Field for a 1:00pm faceoff.
