MEMPHIS -- The Lady Hawks earned their first conference win of season Saturday afternoon, topping Christian Brothers 74-64 in Memphis.
Shorter improves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the GSC; while the Lady Bucs slip to 2-3 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
The opening period was back-and-fourth as the teams traded the lead over the first ten minutes with
Taylor Adams netting a free throw in the final seconds to put the Lady Hawks up, 15-14, at the quarter break.
In the second quarter Shorter kicked into gear, adding 20 points while holding Christian Brothers to 11 to take a 35-25 advantage into the intermission. The Lady Bucs tied the game at 17 on a three-pointer by Madison Luckett with 8:43 to play in the frame. But, the Lady Hawks answered with a layup from
Shaundricka Mann on their next possession to take the lead and spark a 6-3 run to head into the quarter's media timeout with a 23-20 advantage. In the final five minutes the Shorter added to it and took a ten point lead into halftime.
Christian Brothers looked to come back early in the second half, using an 8-2 run to open the third period and pull to within four. But the Lady Hawks countered with an 8-1 run of their own to put the game out of reach and hang on for the win 74-64.
Shorter was led by Adams, who tallied her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds; while also adding two blocks. Four other Lady Hawks turned in double figures on the day with
Kayla Tillie posting a career high, 14 points. Mann added 13, and both
Tamarr Williams and
Jackie Hudson chipped in with 11 each.
The Lady Hawks shot 49 percent on the day; while going 21-28 from the free throw line, receiving 27 points from the bench, and 14 points off turnovers.
Christian Brother was paced by Samantha Reeves' 17 points.
Shorter will be back in action next Saturday afternoon, December 12, when they return to the Winthrop-King Centre to take on Valdosta State at 2:00pm.
