Hawks fall to Union in GSC opener

Jackson, Tenn. --- Despite a late comeback, the Hawks fell to Union 89-86 on the road to kickoff Gulf South Conference play Thursday night.

Shorter moves to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the GSC with the loss; while the Bulldogs improve to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Hawks led 37-34 at the break, and looked to keep the momentum on their side through the final twenty minutes. But Union had other plans; taking the lead on a layup from Jordan Montgomery with 18:20 play. Only to have Shorter regain the advantage moments later on a three-pointer from Alijah Bennett, but the lead was short lived as the Bulldogs tied the game at 46 on a three-pointer by Felipe Rocha with 15:05 to go, and then took the lead for good on a layup from Marterrace Brock on their next possession.

Down the stretch, Union led by as many as 10, but the Hawks wouldn't go down without a fight turning in a 16-8 run in the final two minutes to cut the lead to two with three seconds to go on a layup from Chris Daniels.

Five Hawks finished in double figures on the night with Trevor McDade turning in his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Phil Taylor led Shorter with a team high, 25 points; while both Bennett and Daniels added 14 and Amonte Potter chipped in with a season high 10. Cole Birchfield just missed double-figures with nine points on the night.

Union was led by Brock's 33 points.

Shorter will look to get back in the win column Saturday when they take on Christian Brothers. Game time is set for 5:00pm eastern.
