ATLANTA --Â It was a tale of two halves for the Lady Hawks Tuesday evening as they closed out the first week of the season with a 73-68 win over Clark Atlanta on the road.
The win gives Shorter the season sweep of the Panthers, while also extending their win streak to three games. Clark Atlanta moves to 1-4 on the season.
The Panthers kept the Lady Hawks in check through the first two quarters, taking a 39-22 lead into the break. Overall Shorter went 9-32 (28 percent) from the field in the opening twenty minutes, while the Panthers shot 41 percent through the half. But, despite trailing by 17, the Lady Hawks didn't give up and turned things around in the second half. Shooting 53 percent from the field; while holding Clark Atlanta to 29 percent.
"We really played well in the second half," head coach
Vic Mitchell said. "We came out and did what we needed to do to earn the win."
Sparking the comeback in the second half was 21-3 run that put the Lady Hawks up 43-42 with 3:43 to go in the third period. After the Panthers opened the frame with a three point play, it was all Shorter from there when
Shaundricka Mann got things going with a jumper at the 9:34 mark. And, over the next six minutes, the Lady Hawks tallied 19 unanswered points to take the lead.
For the remaining minutes of the third quarter and the majority of the fourth the teams traded the lead. The Lady Hawks tied the game at 68 on a free throw from
Tamarr Williams with 1:24 to play, and from there converted five straight free throw shots to earn the win 73-68.
Shorter was led on the night by
Taylor Adams; who tallied her second double-double of the year with 14 points and 20 rebounds – 14 defensive. Williams posted a team high 21 points, while
Shakierya McClendon added 15 in the win.
Mykala Jones led the Panthers with 29 points.
The Lady Hawks will take a few days off for the Thanksgiving Holiday, and return to prepare for conference play to begin next weekend. Shorter opens on the road at nationally ranked Union on Thursday, December 3, at 7:00pm eastern. And, will play at Christian Brothers on Saturday, December 5, at 3:00pm eastern. The Lady Hawks conference opener at home will be Saturday, December 12, when they welcome Valdosta State to the Winthrop-King Centre for a 2:00pm eastern start.
