Mobile, Ala. -- They needed overtime, but in the end the Hawks came out on top, 106-96, against Lemoyne-Owen College in Mobile Saturday afternoon.
Down by eight with just under 2:00 to play in regulation, the Hawks fought back; tallying a 9-1 run to erase the deficit and force the extra time. The Magicians stretched their lead to eight (87-79) with 1:56 to play on a layup from Daaron Maston, but Shorter was the one who turned in the magic as
Phil Taylor netted two free throws to spark the comeback for Shorter.
Alijah Bennett and
Cole Birchfield then turned in back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 2 with 00:18 to go, and after Lemoyne-Owen's Will Street netted a free throw, Taylor answered with a three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied 88-88.
In overtime the Hawks took the lead on a free throw from Taylor with 4:06 to play and never trailed, holding the Magicians to eight points in the period while tallying 18 points of their own.
Bennett finished with a team high 28 points in the game, while Taylor added 26 for game. Birchfield added 19 in the win, and
Trevor McDade chipped in with 13 for the Hawks; who move to 2-0 on the season. Rashawn Brown led Lemoyne-Owen with a game high 33 points. The Magicians fall to 0-2 on the year.
Shorter will be back in action on Friday, November 20, against Trevecca Nazarene as part of the UAH Classic in Huntsville, Ala.
