Cleveland, Tenn. -- The Lady Hawks secured the fourth seed for the Gulf South Conference tournament with a 3-2 win over Lee Tuesday night for the first of a two game road trip to end the regular season.
After dropping the first set the Lady Hawks came back to take a 2-1 lead by winning the second and third. Only to have the Flames even things up in the fourth frame, and send the match to a fifth set where Shorter earned the match win with a 15-10 victory in the set.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, and 15-10, respectively.
Four Lady Hawks finished with double figure kills on the night with
Madeline Munroe leading the way with 12. Both
Elizabeth Dowd and
Alicia McClellan added 11, and
BreAnna Thompson finished with 10.
Tiffani Estep finished just out of the mix with 9 in the match.
Cheyenne Frady led the team in assists with 25, while
Dena Pierce added 19. Shorter also finished with eight aces on the night, Frady posting three and Pierce serving up two.
Defensively, five finished with more than ten digs on the night with
Cheyenne McLemore turning in a team high 19. Dowd chipped in with 16 on the night, and both, Frady and
Morgan Cleveland recorded 12; while Pierce added 11 in the game. At the net, Shorter posted 13 blocks; Estep tallied two solo and four assisted, and McClellan finished with six – all assisted.
The Lady Hawks will close out the regular season at Mississippi College on Saturday, November 14, and then be back at home at the Winthrop-King Centre on Tuesday to host one of the GSC Tournament quarterfinal matches. The win for Shorter also secured the fifth seed for Alabama Huntsville; who will visit Rome for Tuesday's matchup. Game time is to be determined.
