Valdosta, Ga. --Â After trading sets, the Blazers came through in the final game to earn the win 3-2 over the Lady Hawks Saturday at the Complex in Valdosta, Ga. Set scores were 18-25, 28-26, 16-25, 25-18, and 15-12, respectively with Shorter taking the second and fourth sets in the match.
Shorter slips to 12-10 on the season and 10-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improves to 19-5 overall and 14-2 in the GSC, while also completing the season sweep of the Lady Hawks.
Elizabeth Dowd led the attack for Shorter, turning a career high in kills on the night with 21.
Morgan Cleveland also finished with double-figure kills in the match with 10, while
Tiffani Estep posted 8. In total the Lady Hawks finished with 8 aces on the night; with Dowd and
Dena Pierce recording two each. Pierce led the way with 32 assists for Shorter, and
Cheyenne Frady posted 17.
On the receiving end, four Lady Hawks finished with double-digit digs with
Cheyenne McLemore leading the way with 18. Pierce chipped in with 17, Estep posted 14, and Dowd added 13. Shorter also posted 11 blocks in the match, with
BreAnna Thompson turning in a team high 7 – two solo, five assisted.
Alicia McClellan added six for the Lady Hawks, all assisted.
Shorter will return to the Winthrop-King Centre for the final home matches of the season, November 5 & 6, when they welcome West Georgia and West Alabama to Rome. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00pm.
