Carrollton, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks saw their five game win streak come to an end Friday afternoon as they opened play at the South Region Crossover with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Tampa in Carrollton, Ga.
Shorter moves to 10-5 on the year; while the Spartans improve to 14-3 overall.
Tampa took the lead in the match with a 25-16 win in the first set. But, the Lady Hawks bounced back in the second set, jumping out to an early 5-0 led to start things off. The teams traded points for the majority of the set, and Tampa pulled ahead 24-20, only to have Shorter tally four consecutive points to tie things up.
Elizabeth Dowd posted a kill to make it a 25-24 match, and give the Lady Hawks set point, but Tampa tied the match and added two quick scores to earn the win 27-25 and extend their lead. The Spartans earned the match victory, with a 25-13 win in the final set.
Dowd led the attack for Shorter with seven kills on the day; while
BreAnna Thompson chipped in with six and both
Tiffani Estep and
Madeline Munroe added five each.
Dena Pierce dished out a team high 14 assists in the match, and
Cheyenne Frady added eight for the Lady Hawks. In total, Shorter tallied six aces in the match with Dowd recording three and Frady adding two.
Cheyenne McLemore led the defense with 11 digs in the match; while
Morgan Cleveland added eight and both Dowd and
Alicia McClellan posted seven.
Shorter will be back in action Saturday morning when they take on Lynn at 10:00am at the Coliseum on the campus of the University of West Georgia. Then at 4:45pm the Lady Hawks will close out the day against St. Leo.
