ROME -- Despite coming back from a two goal deficit and forcing overtime, the Lady Hawks came up just short as West Alabama earned the win 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter slips to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference with the loss, while the Tigers improve to 8-3 on the season and 6-1 in conference play.
Katy Morris put West Alabama on the board in the 23rd minute, giving the Tigers the lead; which they took into halftime. After the break, West Alabama added to it as Natailie Mooney found the back of the net on a pass from Kirsten Reilly, only to have
Corrie Thomas cut the lead in half seconds later on an assist from
Amber Miller. Down by one late in the game, Thomas and Miller came through once again for Shorter as the pair teamed up to tie the game with a goal in the 86th minute to force the extra time.
In overtime, the Tigers earned the win as Reilly netted the game winner with 1:30 to play.
West Alabama outshot Shorter 23-12, but only held an 8-6 margin in shots on goal.
Alden Powell played the complete game in goal for the Lady Hawks, tallying five saves through 98 minutes. Tigers' keeper, Issy Foster, made four saves in the game.
Shorter will be back in action Friday, October 1, as they travel to Clinton, Miss. to take on Mississippi College. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
