ROME -- It was a day of overtime at Ben Brady Field Sunday afternoon, but for the Hawks the outcome was better as they used a penalty kick in extra time to knock off West Alabama, 3-2.
The win improves Shorter to 4-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play; while the Tigers slip to 5-5-2, and 4-1-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
Darwin Lom started things off for the Hawks early, as he netted a goal in the first minute of the game. Down 1-0 at halftime, West Alabama answered to tie the game in the 49th minute on a score from Alex Brown, and took the lead five minutes later on a goal from Liam Ireland. In the 76th minute,
Charlie Dennis netted a pass from
Ryan Horn to tie the game.
Tied at the end of regulation the game moved to extra time. Shorter earned the win, 3-2, when
Mark Hanlon found the back of the net on a penalty kick after the Hawks were fouled inside the box in the 96th minute.
In the end, Shorter outshot West Alabama 19-16; while the Tigers held the advantage in shots on goal 9-6.
Austen Trevers played the complete game in goal for the Hawks, making 7 saves through 96 minutes.
Shorter will return to action Friday, October 16, when they travel to Clinton, Miss. to take on Mississippi College. Game time is set for 4:00pm.
