ROME --Â The Lady Hawks earned their first win in 2015 Monday night, topping West Georgia 78-72 in an overtime affair at the Winthrop-King Centre.
Shorter evens its record at 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the Gulf South Conference with the win; while the Wolves move to 7-6 on the season and 2-5 in the GSC.
In a game that saw the lead change 15 times and the score tied 11, the Lady Hawks came out on top when it mattered. After trailing by one at the half Shorter picked up the pace in the second frame using a 7-0 run through the middle of the period to take the lead 55-48. Only to see West Georgia respond with a 7-1 run over their own to go up by one with 6:38 to play. Through the final minutes the teams matched each other point for point and the Lady Hawks capped off regulation with back to back free throws from
Lindsey Crawford to tie the game 67-67.
In the extra period it was all Shorter, though, as the Lady Hawks held the Wolves to five points – all on free throws, while scoring 11 of their own to earn the 78-72.
In total, Shorter turned in a balanced effort throughout the line-up; ending the game with four players in double figures.
Cynara Pitt led the way; coming off the bench to lead the team with a game high 19 points. Both
Ieshia Alexander and Crawford chipped in with 12, and
Jackie Hudson added 10. In addition to Pitt and Hudson, the Lady Hawks bench made the most of their opportunities; tallying 46 points.
West Georgia had three players finish in double figures with Taylor Beverly posting 19 points, Seandre Lee finishing with 18, and Marion Lemmonier adding 10.
Shorter will look to keep the positive play going as they travel to Mississippi for a weekend road trip at Mississippi College (Saturday, January 10 at 3:00pm) and Delta State (Monday, January 12 at 6:00pm) before returning home Thursday, January 15, to take on longtime rival Lee University at 6:00pm.Â
