Clinton, Miss. --Â Using a strong second half run Mississippi College topped the Lady Hawks, 61-54, Saturday afternoon in Clinton, Miss.
Shorter moves to 7-8 on the season and 3-6 in conference play; while the Lady Choctaws improve to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in the GSC.
It was a tale of two halves for the Lady Hawks as the offense struggled to make shots. During the first half Shorter shot 56 percent, while in the second they were held to 27 percent. MC improved from 40 percent in the opening frame to 50 percent in the second. The biggest difference, however, was from the line; the Lady Hawks shot 47.8 percent in the game, while the Lady Choctaws netted 75 percent of their shots. Â Â
Throughout much of the first half the teams matched each other point for point, seeing a tied game six times and the lead change seven times during the frame. The Lady Hawks pulled away in the final minutes; closing out the period on an 8-1 run to take a nine point, 35-26, lead into the intermission.
Shorter extended its lead in the opening minutes of the second half, only to see Mississippi College turn in a dominant 22-4 run to put the game out of reach of the Lady Hawks; taking a 50-44 lead with 8:38 to play. Shorter was able to cut the lead to as few as one in the final minutes, but couldn't find the go ahead as the Lady Choctaws held on to win by a 61-54 final score.
Ieshia Alexander posted a game high 18 points in the game, with 14 coming before the break. While two MC players turned in double figures – Kristen Sampson (13) and Ashley Minor (10).
The Lady Hawks will look to get back in the win column Monday as they travel to Delta State for a 6:30pm ET tip.
