Brevard, N.C. -- Shorter University took the field Saturday looking to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2004. The Hawks came out and created the first good chances of the game, and in the 21st minute took the lead off a free kick taken by
Julia Raymond who found the head of
Corrie Thomas for the finish. Up 1-0 the Lady Hawks dominated the rest of the first half.
The second half started with the same energy and Shorter looked to increase it's lead. As the Hawks pushed to grab another goal the game was delayed due to lightning. Over an hour later play restarted with 20 minutes remaining in the game. Brevard came out of the locker room, after the delay, and pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer. The pressure was short lived as
Julia Raymond put away her first goal as a Hawk in the 81st minute with the assist coming from
Cheyenne Golden.
"We are very proud of the team," head coach
Ben Birdsong said. "They showed a lot of character this weekend. We are very happy with the goals we scored, but we are even more proud of the clean sheet against Brevard. The back line, composed of three freshman and a junior, played outstanding. Led by freshman goalkeeper,
Alden Powell, it was exciting to see the backs be so organized in two tough games"
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls. They faced quite a few obstacles such as traveling over a four day period and weather delays in both games. For being such a young team, they showed a lot of heart and character; coming together as one and getting the job done."
