By Maggie PruittAthens, Tenn. – The Lady Hawks looked to improve their record to 3-0 on Friday, as they faced the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs. Right away the Hawks took control of the game and scored in the 11th minute of the first half.
Corrie Thomas controlled the ball in the Hawks' attacking third of the field and turned to face the keeper one-on-one. With two defenders on her back, Thomas was able to slide the ball past the Tennessee Wesleyan keeper and score for the Hawks.
Through the remainder of the half, the Lady Hawks kept up the intensity. The Shorter defense and midfield controlled the Bulldogs' attack and did not allow their strikers any solid chances.
After halftime, the Lady Hawks came out with determination to finish the game off. They dominated the second half, keeping the pressure high on the Bulldogs half of the field. Shorter had many chances in the second half, but Tennessee Wesleyan stayed strong and did not concede a goal.
Alden Powell, freshman goal keeper, kept the back line and midfield organized for the Lady Hawks. Powell had five saves in the game and finished with a shutout.
The Lady Hawks held onto the lead and seized another win. They are now 3-0 and will play Truett-McConnell on Tuesday at home. The Lady Hawks will try and increase their record to 4-0, which would be the best start in Shorter Women's Soccer history.
