Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Hawks drop GSC opener to hot-shooting Union

ROME, Ga. – Having knocked off the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division II team five days earlier, visiting Union University showed no signs of a letdown Thursday night when the Lady Bulldogs used a deadly accurate outside touch to hand the Shorter Lady Hawks a 100-74 defeat at the Winthrop-King Centre in the first Gulf South Conference showdown of the season for the two teams.

Despite a 29-point performance from Shorter senior Ieshia Alexander, Union turned in a dazzling display from long range, hitting 14 of 22 of their shots from beyond the three-point arc, ended the night connecting on 66 percent of all their shots from the floor and had five players reach double digits.

The setback snaps a four-game win streak the Lady Hawks brought into the game and gives Shorter a 4-3 overall, while the Lady Bulldogs, who upended No. 1-ranked Nova Southeastern last Saturday, improves to 5-0 overall.

Union wasted little time establishing control of the game, breaking out to as much as a 19-point lead midway through the first half but saw the Lady Hawks charge back to cut the deficit to eight points with 6:35 to go until halftime when Alexander drilled a three-pointer.

That, however, was as close as Shorter would get the rest of the way as Union closed out the first 20 minutes of play assuming a 48-36 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs increased the pace when the second half started, building their lead to 25 points just five minutes into the final period – Union missed just six of its 26 shots after the break – and took their biggest lead of the game, 91-62, with 5:22 to go to put the contest out of Shorter's reach.

Cynara Pitt joined Alexander in double figures ending the game with 17 points, while Jackie Hudson added 13 points for the Lady Hawks, who finished hitting 43 percent of their shots.

Amy Pilamlee had the hot hand for Union, connecting on 12 of her 16 shots – four of five from three-point range – to led her team with 29 points, while DeAnna Thompson added 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Kelsey Risner continued the scoring barrage with 19 points, Chelsea Bodiford had 12 and Fredi Nielson finished with 11 points for Union.

The Lady Hawks will have a one-day rest before they're back in action Saturday for another conference challenge, hosting Christian Brothers at 2 p.m. at the WKC.
