Kissimmee, Fla. --Â The Hawks are headed to the semifinals of the NCCAA National Championship thanks to an overtime goal from
Ryan Horn to top Bethel 2-1 Wednesday evening.
With the game tied 1-1, Shorter needed the extra frame to seal the win and Horn didn't waste much time providing the heroics, netting the game winner in the 97th minute.
Bethel got on the board first as Ricardo Carvalho found the back of the net in the 9th minute, but the Hawks answered a minute later when
Fernando De Barros scored on an assist from
Robert Ochieng.
Despite many opportunities to take the lead during regulation Shorter couldn't net the go ahead. Hawks' goalkeeper,
Nicolas Ferrigno, kept the team in the game making six saves on seven shots faced.
In total Shorter only led in the shots column by one, holding a slim 13-12 shots margin, while Bethel held the advantage in shots on goal 7-4.
In Friday's semifinals the Hawks will take on a familiar foe in longtime rival and fellow Gulf South Conference member, Lee University, who won Pool B with a 3-2 win over Southwestern Christian University Wednesday afternoon. The winner will advance to the finals on Saturday to take on Palm Beach Atlantic or Bethel.
During the regular season, Shorter topped Lee, 4-2, at home.
