ROME -- In the Saturday's first semifinal match top seed Shorter took on fourth seed North Alabama, and after a back and forth match came away on the losing end; dropping the match 3-2 to the Lions.
North Alabama (20-11) advanced to the championship match – where they fell to Valdosta State 3-0 – by jumping out to an early 1-0 lead; winning the first set 25-22. The Lady Hawks came back and won the second set 25-19, before dropping the third 25-20, and taking the fourth 25-16. With the match tied 2-2, play went to the final set, where it was all UNA. Final game score was 15-8.
Shorter (21-5) had three players finish with double figure kills on the day; with
Erica Baker leading with a match high 20.
Anna Graham added 15, and
Jasmine Crook chipped in with 10.
Elizabeth Dowd narrowly missed double digits, tallying 9 in the match.
Cheyenne Frady posted 34 assists for the Lady Hawks, and
Dena Pierce finished with 26.
Defensively, Shorter was paced by Dowd; who turned in 16 digs on the day.
Cheyenne McLemore added 15 for the Lady Hawks, and Crook pitched in the 12. Each of Shorter's three seniors – Baker, Crook, and Graham – tallied three blocks on the day, with each turning in one solo and two assisted.
North Alabama was led by a 19 kill performance from freshman, Lexie Bradley. While GSC Freshman of the Year, Ashtyn Kapovich tallied 26 digs for the Lions.
