ROME --Â The Hawks needed overtime, but in the end they came away victorious; winning a thrilling 2-1 game over West Florida.
The win marks the first time Shorter has beaten the Argos in program history, and gives the Hawks a perfect 2-0 record in conference play. Overall Shorter moves to 3-5-1 on the season. West Florida drops to 3-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Argos lone goal came in the 17th minute on a header from David Born, and gave UWF the lead at halftime 1-0. Shorter answered in the second half, at the 64:34 mark, as
Christopher Cummins tallied his first goal of the season on a feed from
Matt Goss.
With the game now tied both teams look for the go ahead, and each had chances to put the game away but time expired without either team scoring. The first overtime period came and went, with the game still tied, so play moved into a final 10 minutes. But, the Hawks didn't need that long as
Irvin Espinal delivered the final blow connecting on a header from a
Charlie Dennis corner kick with 5:46 to play.
Shorter held the advantage in shots 18-11, and in shots on goal 5-4.
Nicolas Ferrigno tallied 3 saves for the Hawks in a complete game performance on the day.
Shorter will be back in action Friday, October 10, as they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take on No. 21 Alabama Huntsville. Game time is set for 8:30pm eastern. Â
