Lady Hawks keep the streak going with 3-1 over Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS -- Volleyball extended its win streak to nine with a 3-1 win over Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hawks improve to 11-2 overall and 9-0 in Gulf South Conference play. While the Lady Bucs move to 708 on the season, and 5-5 in the conference.

Christian Brothers kept things close for Shorter as set scores were 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, and 28-26, respectively.

The first game was back and forth throughout with the Lady Bucs tying the game on set point as a result of service error from Erica Baker, but the Lady Hawks were able to take the lead on a Christian Brothers error, and earn the win on a kill from Elizabeth Dowd.

With Shorter up 23-18 in the second set, the Lady Bucs went on a 4-0 run, to make it a 23-22 game. The Lady Hawks then answered by scoring the final two points needed for the win on a kill from Dowd and from a service error on CBU.

Christian Brothers earned the win in the third game using a couple of well-placed 3-0 runs to pull away from the Shorter.

The Lady Hawks then closed out the match with a win in the fourth set despite a back and forth game. After tying the game on set point for CBU, Shorter went on a 4-2 run to earn the match win 28-26.

When it was all said and done there were five Lady Hawks with double-digit kill totals. Both Jasmine Crook and Dowd tallied 12, followed by Anna Graham with 11, and both Lauren Meyer and Baker with 10. While Dena Pierce and Cheyenne Frady each recorded 27 assists in the match for Shorter.  

Defensively, five Lady Hawks also posted double-digit dig totals. Crook led the way with 19, Dowd followed with 18, and Pierce tallied 13. Cheyenne McLemore chipped in with 11, and Frady posted 10 in the match. Baker and Crook each also recorded 3 blocks, while Graham and Kelsi Jones added 2 each.

Christian Brothers was led by Alexis Gillis; who tallied 18 kills and 19 digs, and Sami Gruse posted a match high 35 assists on the night.

Shorter will return to action Tuesday, October 7, when West Georgia visits the Winthrop-King Centre for a 7:00pm start.
