Lady Hawks sweep West Alabama, 3-0

ROME -- The Lady Hawks moved to 16-3 on the season and 13-1 in conference play Friday night with a 3-0 win over West Alabama.

The win gives Shorter the season sweep of the Tigers, as well as, extends their home win streak to 16 matches. A total that dates back to August 8, 2013, and is the eighth longest in NCAA Division II.

Game scores Friday were 25-19, 25-23, and 25-15, respectively.

The first game was Shorter all the way, as they jumped out to an early lead that they didn't give up. In the second game, however, the Tigers fought back using a steady attack to tie the score on multiple occasions. The Lady Hawks ultimately put the game away going on an 8-6 run to close things out after UWA tied the game at 17-17. In the final game, with the West Alabama leading 6-4, Shorter tallied five consecutive points to jump ahead and then used a late 4-0 run to earn the win.

Offensively the Lady Hawks were led by and 11 kill night from Erica Baker. Jasmine Crook chipped in with 9, and Elizabeth Dowd added 8 for Shorter. Dena Pierce tallied 21 assists in the match and Cheyenne Frady recorded 18 in the win.

Defensively, Cheyenne McLemore led the Lady Hawks; tallying 11 digs on the night. Baker also added 2 blocks in the match – one solo and one assisted.

West Alabama was led Sadie Beam; who tallied 11 kills and 13 digs.

Shorter will return to action Saturday afternoon as Mississippi College visits the Winthrop-King Centre for the first time. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
