ROME --Â After dropping their last two conference games, the Hawks got back on track Friday night with a 5-1 over GSC newcomer, Mississippi College.
Shorter improves to 4-7-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play; while the Choctaws fall to 7-5 on the season and 2-4 in the GSC.
The Hawks took the lead early on
Matt Goss' first goal of the season, after
Irvin Espinal and
Charlie Dennis worked to set up the play. Seven minutes later – at the 9:01 mark – however, Mississippi College found the equalizer, on a goal from George Fradenburg.
Nico Stutley struck in the 18th minute to give Shorter the lead once again, netting his first goal of the season. And Dennis, who'd already recorded an assist in the game got into the scoring column again in the 23rd minute, this time netting a goal of his own on a feed from Espinal and
Robert Ochieng. Espinal also added a goal for Shorter in the first half, to give the Hawks the lead 4-1 going into the break.
Up by three in the second half, head coach
Paulo Neto, was able to make changes to give his starters a break, while also giving his reserves a chance to shine.
Richard Coomer made the most of his time in the game by extending Shorter's lead to four with his first goal of the season.
All in all, the Hawks outshot the Choctaws 18-9, and held the advantage 8-4 in on goal shots.
Nicolas Ferrigno played the complete game for Shorter making three saves through 90 minutes.
The Hawks will be back in action Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm as they host GSC foe, Delta State, at Ben Brady Field.Â
