Valdosta, Ga. -- The streak ended Saturday morning as the Lady Hawks fell to Valdosta State 3-1 on the road.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead; winning the first two games by score of 25-23 and 25-20, respectively. Shorter answered in the third game, to avoid the sweep, with a 25-16 win, but Valdosta State came back and took the game four, 25-20, to earn the win and give the Lady Hawks their first GSC loss of the season.
Shorter moved to 13-3 on the season and 11-1 in the Gulf South Conference with the loss, while the Blazers improved to 12-3 overall and 9-3 in the GSC.
Jasmine Crook led the offense for the Lady Hawks, tallying 15 kills on the day;
Anna Graham chipped in with 10 and
Elizabeth Dowd added 8. Both,
Dena Pierce and
Cheyenne Frady, tallied 20 assists; while Pierce posted 3 services aces and Frady had 2.
Defensively,
Cheyenne McLemore led Shorter; turning in 16 digs in the match. Dowd recorded 13, Pierce added 12, and Crook posted 10. The Lady Hawks finished the day with 14 total blocks in the match; with Graham leading the way with 6 – all assisted.
Kelsi Jones aided in five for Shorter,
Erica Baker finished with four, and Crook had a hand in three.
Valdosta State was led by Jenna Kirkwood, who posted 21 kills in the match. And, Jessica Codato; who dished out 31 assists, and tallied 19 digs.
Shorter will return to action Tuesday, October 14, as they travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on Lee University for the first time this season.
