Cleveland, Tenn.—They knew it would be a tough job, but the men's soccer team was up for the challenge as they began the season by taking on the current No. 1 and defending NCAA Division II National Champion, Lynn University
. Shorter rose to the occasion, but in the end they just weren't able to pull off the upset, dropping the season opener 4-1.
Jake Furman scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game to give Lynn the lead, 2-1. Shorter was able to cut the lead in half at the 24:57 mark to make it a 2-1 game, as sophomore
Balazs Horvath scored his first goal for the Hawks.
Lynn added another goal in the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the break, and scored once more in the second half for the 4-1 final score.
The Fighting Knights outshot Shorter 15-5, with two players chipping in with four each.
In goal,
Austen Trevers had three saves in 90 minutes of work for the Hawks; while, Harris Smiler recorded one save for Lynn.
Shorter will be back in action Sunday, as they face off against King University at 4:30pm.
