Men's soccer tops Union, 4-3

Box Score By Chris Riley

ROME--
The Shorter University Men's Soccer team stepped out onto Ben Brady Field for the final time this season to take on Union University in a Gulf South Conference Matchup. Sunday was the final home game for five Shorter seniors as Diego Gonzalez, Julian Kitkowski, Kyle Stonecipher, Ryan Mcgouirk and Nick Christiensen  were honored at half time for their dedication, hard work and excellent attitude towards the Shorter Soccer program throughout their time at the school.

he game turned out to be a fitting send off for the programs seniors as Shorter came out on top eventually winning 4-3, and improving to 9-5-2 on the season.

Shorter got off to the perfect start in the match, keeping the ball well and eventually finding senior Kitkowski on the right hand side, his excellent cross was met with an equally good header from Robert Ochieng who scored his 8th and later 9th goals of the season to put the hawks up 1-0 with just 4 minutes gone. Getting the goal seemed to relax Shorter to the point where they completely took their foot off the gas, allowing Union to comeback with 3 unanswered goals to lead 3-1 with 10 minutes left to go in the half. Despite being down by two Shorter enjoyed much of the possession in the half, and outshot Union 10-8 in the period. Gavin Smith came off the bench to give the Hawks a lifeline with just two minutes left in the half with his first goal of the season as he found himself in the right place at the right time to nod in a looped ball at the back post.

Knowing that they had to come out in the 2nd half with a completely changed attitude the Hawks were able to pull themselves together and it was just two minutes into the half when Sam Clare met a Diego Gonzalez corner to glance a header inside the far post.  Gonzalez turned provider again just 12 minutes later as his drilled ball from the left hand side cannoned back off the post and onto Ochieng who diverted it home to give Shorter the 4-3 lead. Shorter again controlled much of the play in the second half, and but for some excellent stops by Matt Kesler in goal for Union the Hawks could and should have scored many more.

Union though continued to fight and found a chance for themselves with 12 minutes to go in the game, though the shot came back off the crossbar. Shorter would strike the bar themselves just 5 minutes later as Irvin Espinal found himself in behind, with his shot narrowly missing the target. Smith again created himself a chance in the dying minutes of the game as his looped header was just tipped off the line by the outstanding Kesler, with Shorter out shooting Union 23-15 in the match and having 15 shots on target to Union's 6.

Shorter will play their final game of the regular season on Friday as they make the short trip to Lee University, with a win or draw guaranteeing the Hawks the runners up spot in the Gulf South Conference.
