In his inaugural year, Landis F. McCoy knows it is an extreme blessing to be under such superior leadership of Head Coach Dawn Brown here at Shorter University. He is well aware of her exceptional championship experiences on and off the floor at the division one level. Coach McCoy is excited to join this family oriented Lady Hawks program as he brings great value to the Shorter University women's basketball coaching staff after experiencing more than a decade of great success at the high school level serving as the head boy’s basketball coach of his alma mater located in Daytona Beach, Florida, Mainland High School. Â
Prior to his tenure at the helm, McCoy began voluntarily coaching youth in the local YMCA and Police Athletic Leagues around the city while studying towards earning a bachelor’s degree in Education at Bethune-Cookman University. During the final two years of his collegiate experience, he was blessed to hold two one-year stints as the top assistant for both Mainland High School and Calvary Christian Academy in Ormond Beach, Florida. After those two successful years assisting both programs he was promoted to the head coaching position at Mainland in 2008, making him the youngest head coach hire in Volusia County history at the age of twenty-three. His young energetic leadership led and kept his teams atop the conference while being crowned champion twice, finishing second on three separate occasions, as well as the distinctive honor of being named the 2010 News-Journal Coach of the Year; while ultimately finishing his career with 140 wins.
Off the court McCoy has forever been an advocate for working extremely close in proximity with a wide variety of community service organizations to stay involved with giving back around his community such as: the annual Volusia County Toys for Tots collection and distribution inactive, mentoring and tutoring elementary school students and All-Pro Dads. He also continuously works in direct connection with some of our nation’s top spring and summer elite team exposure camps, clinics and showcase events throughout the eastern coastline for both men and women student-athletes at locations such as: Campbell University, Florida State University, University of Florida, University of North Florida, the Amateur Athletic Union at Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports and Hoop-Group Elite camps. His passion is motivating young men and women to achieve goals of prioritizing and strategizing toward a winning mentality in life, all while contributing to their overall growth, development and success as students though building upon our relationship of athletics.
