A member of the Shorter coaching staff since 2008, Shawn Turner has become a key component to the Hawks’ success on and off the field.
Returning to assume the duties as Shorter’s wide receivers coach this season – he spent last year coaching the team’s cornerbacks – Turner has developed the Hawks’ receiving corps into an integral part of the offense, providing support for a potent ground game but also giving the offense a major aerial threat.
Since 2009, Turner has help the role as the team’s Academic Coordinator, pursuing a passion to see every player graduate from Shorter and seeing the fruits of his work produce results. In the past four years, the Hawks have produced more than 100 players who have received academic recognition, first on the Mid-South Conference and NAIA Scholar-Athlete levels and last year – Shorter’s first season as an NCAA Division II program – saw 25 Hawks named to Gulf South Conference’s Fall 2012 Academic Honor Roll.
A graduate of Shorter where he is currently finishing his work to obtain his Master’s in Leadership, Turner has coached on the high school level at Fort Payne (Ala.), Valleyhead (Ala.), and Dade County (Ga.).
Shawn Turner is married to Jerelyn Horton Turner and has four children: Sean (21), current Shorter football player Darius (19), Arrielle (17) and Desmon (15).
