AUGUSTA, Ga.- The Shorter Volleyball team split the last day of the Augusta Invitational with a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 16-25, 18-25) loss to Lander before rallying in the nightcap to defeat Augusta in a 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-8) reverse sweep, improving the Hawks to 2-5 this season.
Match One: Shorter 1, Lander 3
After falling behind 8-3 in the opening set, the Hawks rallied to reclaim the lead with a 10-1 run. The Bearcats fought back, evening it up at 21, but the Hawks prevailed, scoring four unanswered to take the first set. The Hawks once again battled with Lander early on in the second set, with the Bearcats gaining an advantage with an 18-14 lead late. Shorter stormed back, cutting the deficit to two, but it would not be enough as Lander evened things up with a victory.
After another tight start to begin set three, Lander took control, going on an 8-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Bearcats continued to roll, extending their lead to as much as ten to take the third set. A hot start from Lander propelled them to a 20-10 lead late in the fourth set. Despite the deficit, Shorter managed to go on an 8-2 run to bring them within striking distance. Unfortunately, Lander would take the final set, scoring three straight to take the 3-1 win.
Caroline Sivills paced the Hawks with 14 kills and 15.5 points as Helena Kelley finished with 28 assists, tying her career-high. Defensively, Kelley led with 19 digs as Caitlyn Sutton followed with 18 herself.
Match Two: Shorter 3, Augusta 2
The Hawks got off to a quick start in the opening set, jumping out in front 5-2. Both teams continued to battle, as the hosts managed to push their lead out late. The Hawks battled but could not hold out as Augusta took the first set. The Jaguars dominated the second set, jumping out to a big lead early on and never trailing as they took the 2-0 lead.
A strong start in set three propelled the Hawks to an 8-2 run. Shorter continued to extend their lead and would claim the third set. Augusta regained momentum in the fourth set, taking a 9-6 lead. Both teams made a push late, with the Hawks managing to outpace their opponent 25-22, forcing a fifth set. Shorter made the most of their opportunities with a strong start in the final set and never looked back as they pulled off the reverse sweep with a 15-8 win.
Sivills once again led Shorter with 17 kills and 22.5 points, while Kelley dished out 22 assists. Sutton led the way in digs with 21, as Acca Berube contributed 20 herself.
UP NEXT
Shorter will make their regular-season home debut on Wednesday as they face off with defending conference champions Emmanuel with first serve slated for 6:00 PM.
